2020 vision – 2019 in review

1st January 2020 by Sarah Leave a Comment

I’ll be making that joke all year so you’d better get used to it.

But what a year it’s been! (It’s actually the law that all annual round-up articles start like that so don’t email me.)

Some bloke with Chad Stahelski

During 2019 several things happened:

Like, you know, stuff. But most importantly, I was in the same room as KEANU REEVES after I won tickets to the UK premiere of John Wick 3: Parabellum (it was a very big room filled with lots of other people but it happened).

More movie highlights for me:

My Insta Best 9. My fave Fake Naked Gerry pic is nowhere to be seen, the philistines

After much anticipation I got to see the third film in a trilogy I’ve been following for years, with a hot lead who is now aging, injured and almost broken. And yet he triumphs.

Yes Angel Has Fallen. And apparently they’re making MORE of them (check out my overview of all three films, Gerard Butler’s “Fallen” Oeuvre, which is also my best pun of the year. And trust me, it was a crowded field).

Oh yes and John Wick 3. After so much anticipation, leaving me slightly overwhelmed and secretly longing for sneak-releases in tiny independent cinemas, Keanu clattered into town on the back of a horse, in one spectacular scene stabbing even more people in the head than Mike Banning.

And then he was back AGAIN, not long after. In Toy Story 4 he was Duke Kaboom, Canada’s greatest stuntman, who can’t actually do any stunts so what say you, Canada?

In fact Keanu was all over the place in 2019, including Replicas, which really was all over the place, though I very much enjoyed writing about it.

Replicas, giving cloning an even worse name than it had before

Also these things happened:

1, My site traffic went up 75%! If any of that is down to you, thank you and glad you came back, to contribute today to next year’s self-congratulatory New Year’s Day article.

Fake Naked Gerry, here to inspire you for 2020. You can thank me now

2, I wrote 152 full length reviews and that’s not even counting all the ones still in my Drafts folder…

3, … and around 30 reviews of short films.

4, I interviewed filmmakers, actors, and (one of my highlights) Oscar-winning costume director Michael O’Connor.

How was it? Ruff! (Just kidding – he was lovely and as someone who adores clothes but knows nothing about them, I learnt loads.)

5, To better highlight my children’s astonishment at some of the stuff I make them watch, we started a kids’ reviews section on the site.

(They were also sent Playmobil movie tie-in toys to test as a result of my 7 year old’s review of the film. Proof that you don’t have to sell your soul for freebies, as he only gave it three stars and wrote that “the songs were a bit boring and the film goes on for a long time”.)

6, In a terrifying lapse in parenting, I took my son to see Cats.

I’m sorry kid but these are desperate times

7, I went on my first podcast! I was talking about my favourite film, the name of which temporarily escapes me.

8, Spooky Scottish siren movie The Isle quoted me on the back of their DVD…

9, and I was on a poster! (For I Love My Mum)

10, Finally, yet again I failed to make any actual money doing this. It’s a good thing I like writing.

What do you mean, you don’t read the backs of DVD cases

So onwards and upwards into 2020 – and THANK YOU for visiting and reading my work, especially if you got to the end of whatever you were perusing.

I hope you all had a Gerry Christmas and here’s to a Keanu Year in 2020.
