** Read my review of Suspiria (2018) ***
Every time I hear about the upcoming Suspiria remake it reminds me I still haven’t seen the original 1977 Suspiria and I feel horribly guilty.
I actually bought the DVD last autumn, so any year now I should be in a position to give you a heads-up on what happens.
Today we got a trailer for the new Luca Guadagnino-directed version, though I’m not sure I can tell you what happens in this yet, either.
Unlike many modern movie trailers it raises more questions than it answers, and you just know the answers when they come (not until November!) are going to be supremely unsettling.
The updated version stars Dakota Johnson as dancer Susie Bannion (looking remarkably like Lindsay Lohan), and Tilda Swinton as dance teacher Madame Blanc (looking remarkably like a character from Eastenders).
The original Susie Bannion from Argento’s version, Jessica Harper, is also back in a different role.
It all looks very bloody and bloody scary; and also rather dull, in terms of colours, tone and the ordinary suburban locations.
The dance school, though, drips menace from the off.
Guadagnino also directed Swinton-starrer A Bigger Splash and Call Me By Your Name, both of which are enervatingly hot and sunny, with any browns and greys caused by the parched heat.
Suspiria is released in the USA on 2 November 2018. They’ve already released four new posters called Soul, Whisper, Mother and Tremble (left), lines I’m planning on whispering to my children at bedtime to help them sleep.
UPDATE 24 August 2018: You can also check out the new full-length Suspiria trailer.
