Holmes & Watson Trailer Is Certainly Elementary

29th September 2018 by Sarah Leave a Comment

UPDATE: Read my Holmes & Watson review now.

Our queens have to put up with a lot when meeting the Great British Public, but Victoria’s audience with Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson at Buckingham Palace must stretch even her reserves of decorum to breaking point.

She’s probably the only person who could maintain that blank expression, even more than me and I have both a mother’s selective hearing, and Botox.

The new Holmes & Watson film is released later this year, and it’s not just the jokes that get murdered. The plot involves a killing at the palace, hopefully involving a gag as then we’ll know there will be at least one.

Actually that’s mean of me. There are jokes in the trailer, very basic ones – and though on first watch my reaction was a very regal WTF? I’ve now seen it three times and each time I’ve laughed more than before. Our own dear Queen Vic gets bashed, there’s a Victorian selfie stick and the world’s worst-best disguise. Or possibly best-worst disguise.

It comes out in the UK on Boxing Day, by which time I’ll be desperate for a trip to the cinema if only to get away from the previous day’s terrible jokes and the Queen. Oh.

Holmes & Watson stars Will Ferrell as Sherlock Holmes and John C Reilly as Dr Watson, with Ralph Fiennes as arch nemesis Moriarty (will be get naked? He usually does). The supporting cast also looks terrific (Rebecca Hall, Kelly Macdonald, Hugh Laurie, Rob Brydon) though why Judi Dench isn’t playing the queen I have no idea. Surely a law has been broken? Though we do get Ma Larkin herself, Pam  Ferris, instead.

Directed by Etan Cohen, the comedy crime film is released in the USA on 9 November.
