The Last Bus trailer: Timothy Spall is on the trip of a lifetime

23rd June 2021 by Sarah Leave a Comment

And those lakes he passes were created from my own tears of as I watched this.

The Last Bus is about a widower travelling the length of the country, on buses, using his bus pass. (For non-British readers, UK pensioners are entitled to a free bus pass. That’s all you need to know, along with the fact that The Last Bus stars the acting powerhouse and national treasure that is Timothy Spall.)

I don’t know if it’s based on a true story, though the trailer has that feel to it, but it absolutely tugs at the heartstrings. In fact I’ve just written a “how could you do this to me!” email to the publicist who sent it, probably hideously mistyped through my ugly crying.

Here’s the synopsis:

John O’Groats, Scotland: An elderly man, Tom (Spall), whose wife has just passed away, uses only local buses on a nostalgic trip to carry her ashes all the way across the UK to Land’s End, where they originally met, using his free bus pass. Unbeknownst to Tom, his journey begins to capture the imagination of the local people that he comes across and, ultimately, becomes a nationwide story.

The Last Bus is directed by Gillies MacKinnon from a script by Joe Ainsworth, and is out in UK cinemas on 27 August 2021. Watch the (very spoilery!) trailer below.
