Chills And Chilblains In New Red Sparrow Trailer

8th January 2018 by Sarah Leave a Comment

*** My Red Sparrow movie review is up now ***

The new trailer for upcoming spy thriller Red Sparrow has arrived, with Jennifer Lawrence playing Russian ballerina Dominika Egorova, forced after witnessing a killing to become a sparrow, or spy.

Training at Sparrow School is overseen by Charlotte Rampling, who tells her newest recruits: “From this day forward you will become sparrows. Weapons in a global struggle for power”. Which isn’t something I’ve ever heard a sparrow called, except maybe by an eagle lobbing one at a particularly vicious penguin.

The training looks pretty tough, though it also seems to include a makeover, as soon Dominika is platinum blonde and showing a lot more leg. At Sparrow School your body is a weapon, and I don’t think they mean you throw yourself out of a window and squash your opponents flat.

She certainly learns how to defend herself though, having a fist fight in the bathroom, and I guess she wished she had her own iron shower curtain there*.

And it turns out there’s a CIA agent in town – so she’s sent to seduce him.

The decidedly chilly-looking Red Sparrow also stars Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jeremy Irons; whose face seems to have been designed, in his later years, for taut spy thrillers.

It’s directed by Francis Lawrence and I’m expecting great things, as he was the man behind the camera for Constantine. (Yes I know he directed the Hunger Games trilogy. But CONSTANTINE!!). Red Sparrow is released on 2 March 2018.

*1980s joke for the over 40s.
