The Artemis Fowl trailer is here, criminally late

3rd March 2020 by Sarah Leave a Comment

No idea what the story’s about, beyond a tween genius criminal mastermind who has to rescue his dad. It all looks quite complicated, and in our house our books of choice are Captain Underpants, particularly the Turbo Toilet 2000.

BUT! Dame Judi Dench with elf ears piloting a spaceship is five stars all on its own, and hot Colin Farrell, as Artemis’s uber-criminal dad, five more.

Ferdia Shaw as Artemis Fowl II

My first thought when the trailer started was Harry Potter meets Thunderbirds, only maybe evil, and it does indeed have trolls, a giant dwarf (wait, what?), and fairies.

Here’s the synopsis:

A fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared.

With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies.

Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan – so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.

This is what happens if you try to flash someone in Waitrose

It all looks fun, though there’s a lot to get your head around in that trailer if you’re not familiar with the books.

Artemis Fowl is based on the first two books from Eoin Colfer’s novels and stars Ferdia Shaw as Artemis, Colin Farrell as his dad Artemis Fowl I, Nonso Anozie as Butler, Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short, Josh Gadd as Mulch Diggums and Judi Dench as Commander Root. Kenneth Branagh directs.

The film was meant to come out last summer, but now has a US / UK release date of 29 May 2020, so I’ll find out then if it can lure my two away from that Turbo Toilet 2000.
