…unless you’re a middle aged woman, in which case buy yourself a tall black hat and wander through the trees cackling and scaring the shit out of everyone.
The further back you go looking into fairy tales the darker they seem to get, and Gretel and Hansel director Ozgood Perkins seems to be resurrecting that darkness with his soon-to-be-released horror Gretel & Hansel.
In the new featurette (below), Alice Krige, who plays Holda the witch, calls the look of the movie “magical reality”.
Perkins himself says Gretel & Hansel is about “the elemental fear of loss of innocence, of being turned out into the world before you’re ready”, though metaphors aside Holda looks terrifying.
All this and those poor kids don’t even get any free gingerbread.
You can watch the latest trailer here. Gretel and Hansel also stars Sophia Lillis (Beverley in It) as Gretel, and Samuel Leakey as Hansel. It’s out in the USA on 31 January, though I can’t find a UK release date listed yet.
