Doggedly searching

3rd October 2020 by Sarah

This was a search term used to get to my site today, and really a filmmaker needs to make a movie with this title:

I can see it now: a hugely rich American family employ a mysterious man with a slightly over-the-top English accent to serve their pampered pooches. Then he disappears, taking their favourite dog and a stash of jewelled collars and dog leads with him and leaving only a message spelt out in Bonios behind: “Ruff Luck!”

[Jim Carrey for the vanishing dog butler / Lupita Nyong’o and Armie Hammer for the rich couple.]

Alternatively, if it was you and you want to know what happens to the dog in Gerard Butler’s death-strewn lighthouse tale The Vanishing, then I can tell you that… (scroll down)

Jip, who doesn’t vanish

…nothing!

As far as I could see from the movie, the dog stays in the lighthouse all the time while the teams of lighthouse keepers change regularly.

The last we see of him (Jip I think he’s called) he’s standing silently in the lighthouse kitchen with James and Thomas. James (Gerard Butler) has gone mad and killed Donald, and he and Thomas (Peter Mullan) are about to leave on their boat with the gold. Once on the boat, they put Donald’s body over the side, then James gets Thomas to help him drown himself in the water.

I don’t think we see the dog accompany them to the boat – I think he stays in the lighthouse.
