I did giggle at Vinnie Jones’s menacingly growly voiceover in this new trailer for The Big Ugly (a title with room for myriad tweaks and variations) – an action revenge thriller that sees a London mobster transplanted to the US for a money-laundering oil deal.
Neelyn (Jones), an enforcer for UK gang boss Harris (Malcolm McDowell) finds himself in West Virginia – “deep in the ‘ills of Appalachia” in fact – working with their partner in the deal, Harris’s old friend Preston (Ron Perlman), an American oilman. But then Neelyn’s girlfriend Fiona (Lenora Crichlow) is killed, with the prime suspect Preston’s son Junior (Brandon Sklenar).
It’ll be interesting to see if this turned out to be your standard action thriller or something more (the enjoyably tropey trailer throws everything into the mix and then some); and I hope Crichlow’s Fiona turns out to have more to do in the movie than simply be the reason for Neelyn’s violent vengeance.
We can find out on 24 July, when it’s released on digital in the UK (I haven’t seen a US release date yet).
The Big Ugly is written and directed by Scott Wiper and also stars Nicholas Braun, Leven Rambin, Bruce McGill and Joelle Carter.
