“You must wonder why you drove him to it,” says the local (male) vicar to Harper, after she’s just explained she saw her husband throw himself off their balcony to his death.
The trailer for upcoming horror-scifi feature Men — written and directed by Alex Garland — is out now. And while it’s extremely unnerving it also looks like a very bleak comedy, as Harper is faced with a succession of common tropes a certain kind of man uses against women: where’s your husband? Don’t eat apples, it only gets you into trouble! Was he following you though — how do you know he even saw you?
Or maybe it’s not funny and just bitter recognition.
Here’s the synopsis:
In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina, Annihilation) feverish, shape-shifting new horror film.
The film stars Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, and Paapa Essiedu, and is out in the UK and US on 20 May 2022.
