It’s 1919 and Herschel Greenbaum’s wife Sarah has a flight of fancy that one day she might be rich, as in “like ‘afford my own gravestone’ rich!”. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Poor Herschel then falls into a vat of brine, and there he stays for 100 years before emerging unscathed in Brooklyn 2019.
There, Herschel (Seth Rogen) discover he has one living descendent – his great grandson Ben, also played by Seth Rogen. The world is a strange place to Great Grandpa Herschel, not least because Ben is an atheist. And single. And unemployed. And friendless.
The answer, Herschel thinks, is a pickle business. Well, he does have over 100 years’ experience.
This is the first trailer for An American Pickle – and presumably the only trailer, as it’s out in UK cinemas on 7 August.
The film is directed by Brandon Trost and is adapted by Simon Rich from his 2013 New Yorker novella Sell Out.
