The first American trailer and poster for Francis Lee’s Ammonite have been released by US distributor NEON.
Kate Winslet plays once-famous palaeontologist Mary Anning, who discovered an extraordinary sea lizard fossil at age 11 but is now in middle age, living in poverty, and selling her fossil finds – “cheap tourist fodder” – to visitors.
Saoirse Ronan is Charlotte Murchison, a London woman on holiday suffering from melancholia whose husband asks Mary to look after her. They are chalk and cheese, with Charlotte even afraid of water, but they fall in love.
It’s set in 1840s England, presumably in Lyme Regis / Charmouth in Dorset, along what is now known as the Jurassic Coast.
Lee wrote and directed, and it also stars Gemma Jones, James McArdle, Alec Secareanu and Fiona Shaw.
Ammonite is showing at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month, and is released in US cinemas on 13 November 2020. There’s no UK release date as yet.
