And no it is not “too soon”.
I do love a festive romcom, especially one set in a quaint English village full of characters from every social class, all living in lovely cottages that would cost at least three-quarters of a million, where the local status quo is disturbed by the arrival of… horror… AN AMERICAN! Oh yes and it snows. (The last time the UK had a “proper” white Christmas was 2010, so we’re told, though we are generally too hungover on Christmas morning to notice.)
I strongly suspect Tinsel Town will follow this entire format for which I am, of course, thrilled.
Tinsel town stars Kiefer Sutherland (American!) and Rebel Wilson (Australian but maybe playing British? I don’t know), and here’s the synopsis:
A washed-up Hollywood action star takes a role in a small English village’s Christmas pageant. With the help of the straight-talking choreographer and quirky cast, he embraces the holiday spirit to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
I will quibble with the word “pageant” – a quick FYI for any Americans reading, Brits don’t have pageants, we have pantomimes, or rather pantos, where reality stars, comedians and soap actors earn exorbitant sums to spend a month dressing up as women (the men) or dressing up as men (the women) while being shouted at by small, over-sugared children on stage twice a day.
And school Christmas plays, where everyone gets a part and if there aren’t enough to go round they get to be an extra star or a sheep or one of the ahistorical 25 wise men. (Or as in my son’s favourite when he was at primary school, a spider.)
Co-starring with Sutherland and Wilson in Tinsel Town are Derek Jacobi, Mawaan Rizwan, Maria Friedman, Jason Manford, Asim Chaudhry, Danny Dyer, Ray Fearon, Lucien Laviscount. It’s directed by Chris Foggin.
In the UK Tinsel Town will be available to stream on Sky Cinema Christmas (and NOW) while it should release in the US in November.
