*** My 4-star review of Joker is now live ***
…and it’s all I can do not to add a “The” to the front of every mention of that title.
I like to find laughter in everything but even I was hard pushed with this one, a standalone origins story about failed comic Arthur Fleck turning to the dark side in Gotham City.
Still, it’s always good to find someone worse at putting on make up than me.
Here’s the synopsis:
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society.
A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
The film premieres at the Venice Film Festival on 31 August, is at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on 9 September, and New York Film Festival (NYFF) on 2 October. Phew! Then it hits UK and US cinemas on 4 October.
Joker also stars Zadie Beetz, Robert Di Nero, Frances Conroy, and Marc Maron.
