HISTORICAL EPIC: ✔️ BEARDS: ✔️ SWORDS: ✔️ SCOTLAND: ✔️ MUD: ✔️.

EXCITEMENT RATING: ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️/5

Angus Macfadyen is back as Robert the Bruce, nearly a quarter of a century after playing the Scottish hero in Braveheart – though this new film is set in 1306, just after the death of William Wallace.

I am SO excited for this movie, even the 7/8ths of me that’s English.

It’s premiering at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this month, then hits UK cinemas on 28 June.

Watch the trailer below and scroll down for images from the movie.

Here’s the synopsis:

“Scotland 1306, Robert the Bruce crowns himself King and takes the ambition of Scotland’s freedom as his own. But he cannot overcome England’s power: defeated again and again, his army is scattered andScotland’s nobility abandons him. Hunted, with a price on his head, he finds himself alone and wounded. The cause of freedom seems lost once more.

Hidden secretly in a secluded croft of a clan pledged to England, and close to death, Robert is nursed back to life by a young widow and her orphaned children. His determination to do what is right, regardless of the cost, reinvigorates his passion to rise again. But it’s not revenge he desires. It’s freedom. Now.”

Robert the Bruce is directed by Richard Gray and written by Macfadyen and Eric Belgau. Starring with Macfadyen are Jared Harris, Daniel Portman, Patrick Fugit, Kevin McNally, Emma Kenney, Zach McGowan and Anna Hutchison.
